St. Joe’s Hottest Bar
Since 1946
Where It Began
A Family Tradition Since 1946
Sal’s Café opened in downtown St. Joseph in the fall of 1946. Marcellus “Sal” and Margaret Schneider built the business with the help of their twelve children, creating a place rooted in family, hospitality, and community.
In 1971, their son Dale and his wife, Diane “Bip” Schneider, took ownership and changed the name to Sal’s Bar & Grill. Over the next five decades, they helped make Sal’s a familiar gathering place for local families, college students, alumni, neighbors, and visitors.
Today, the next generations of the Schneider family continue that tradition. The names and faces behind the bar may change over time, but the purpose remains much the same: serve good food, pour good drinks, and make people feel welcome.
From homemade buns and fresh soups to the kind of bar food people come back for, our menu is made to pair with a good drink and an easy night out.
